Summary

Uses new poetic forms to explore various themes such as the nature of the self and our relations with nature.

With echoes of Whitman and the Upanishads, Song of Myself explores the question of what the self is and how the development of the self is influenced by the conditions of contemporary life. Using various forms, the other poems in the collection explore man in relation—and out of relation—with nature and the possibilities of a projected afterlife.

Advance praise on the title poem of Frederick Bauman’s Song of Myself and Other Poems

“WOW this is really quite a poem I mean really quite a poem, you have transcended yourself … I am very impressed with the structured control of the piece which is accompanied by a hypnotic rhythm … In fact this is one of the best poems I have read in some time … the whole metaphysic of body ‘spinal cord’ et al underlying the piece is quite striking … Its intelligence should be the envy of many lesser poet-tasters … I will have to read and savor this again for sure.” — Ivan Argüelles, author of more than a dozen books of poetry, and winner of the William Carlos Williams Award

Frederick Bauman is the author of two books of poetry previously published by Codhill Press: Feral Idylls and Enneagrammatic Improvisations. He is also the author of Periwinkle, a semi-autobiographical novel of the sixties. He is currently working on a new collection of poems called Lyrical Inquiries. He is married and lives in the Catskill region of New York State.
